Polling stations today opened their doors in Uzbekistan to choose the country’s next President after Islam Karimov, who ruled the Central Asian nation for a quarter of a century until his death three months ago.
The Acting President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who had been the country’s Prime Minister since 2003, candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party, is widely expected to win a five-year term in the election.
Mr. Mirziyoyev is competing with the People's Democratic Party candidate and two others from the Social Democratic Party.
