Venezuelan military demands parliament respect Constitution

 The Venezuelan military on Friday demanded that the opposition-controlled parliament show respect for the Constitution, showing support to President Nicolas Maduro.

The military stated its "unshakable commitment" to the South American country's Constitution in a statement released by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

The statement came one day after the National Assembly's new president, Julio Borges of the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable, called on the military to "rescue the Constitution" during a speech he made when taking office.

Borges accused Maduro of acting "outside the Constitution which is unacceptable."

The defense ministry statement said the parliament's attitude was "sadly contradictory", accusing it of seeking to "generate uncertainty to undermine the legitimacy" of Maduro's presidency.
