Violence kills 1, destroys buildings in Guinea

Witnesses said violence in Guinea’s southeastern forest region killed one person and destroyed several buildings, prompting the government to send in soldiers to restore calm. The violence occurred Monday in the village of Koule, located more than 800 kilometers (497 miles) southeast by road from the capital, Conakry, reported the Associated Press. The village is the birthplace of Moussa Dadis Camara, who seized power in a 2008 military coup but left office a year later following an assassination attempt. Amara Kouroumah, a teacher, said the violence began with members of the local Guerze ethnic group beating a young Konianke man to death after accusing him of stealing from a gas station. Conakry has been racked by violent protests in recent months as the country gears up for legislative elections in September.
