William Hague holds Burma talks with Suu Kyi

British Foreign Secretary William Hague is meeting Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a day after meeting top leaders in the capital Nay Pyi Taw. He is expected to discuss the issue of political prisoners with Ms Suu Kyi, who was released from house arrest in November 2010. He will also meet other dissidents and representatives of ethnic minority groups seeking greater autonomy. Mr Hague\'s is the first visit by a UK foreign secretary to Burma since 1955. His visit is the latest in a series by top diplomats to the South East Asian nation, which has taken steps towards reform in recent months. In November 2010 it held its first polls in 20 years, replacing military rule with a military-backed nominally civilian government. It has also begun to engage in dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi, whose NLD party won the last elections in 1990 but was never allowed to take power. Mr Hague will be keen to know what Britain and its European allies can best do to support the opposition leader and help maintain the momentum of change, says the BBC Rachel Harvey in Rangoon. She says the policy of engagement carries the risk of bestowing legitimacy on a government still tainted by accusations of human rights abuses. But if Aung San Suu Kyi feels that the risk is worth taking, foreign governments are more likely to give it a try, our correspondent adds.
