UN Council supports Somalia new government

The UN Security Council voted unanimously Tuesday to voice its support for the newly elected government in Somalia. British ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the council called for the new government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to “do more in areas such as human rights, rule of law, tackling corruption and improving financial transparency.” The resolution adopted by the council called for the establishment of a management group to oversee the country’s financial system and for the international community to better coordinate efforts to support Somalia, Grant told reporters. The council also supports plans for a ministerial meeting on Somalia next week on the fringes of the UN General Assembly annual session in New York. Grant said British Prime Minister David Cameron will attend the meeting on Somalia, as well as the assembly session.
