
Local Development Minister Adel Labib decided to turn three areas into independent governorates.
The new governorates of Central Sinai, Wahat and Alamain will be marked on Egypt's map, Labib said at a press conference on Wednesday.
He also decided to reduce the area of the governorates of Minya by eight percent to become 30,035 square kilometers and the New Valley by 34 percent to become 428,360 square kilometers.
Labib said the area of Fayyoum will increase by 100 percent to reach 12,961 square kilometers.
The area of Beni Sweif will also increase by 67 percent to become 17,721 square kilometers, Labib said.
The area of Assiut will increase by 105 percent to 28,785 square kilometers, he added.
The area of Sohag will become 28,874 square kilometers, Labib said, noting that this is a 222% increase.
The area of Qena will increase by 194 percent to become 30,107 square kilometers.
The area of Luxor will increase 10 times to become 37,523 square kilometers.
Finally, the area of Aswan will increase by 102 percent to become 192,383 square kilometers.
