Four soldiers were killed and 11 others injured in a terrorist attack on a military bus near Nebeur between El-Kef and Jendouba provinces, northwest Tunisia, Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of National Defence announced.
The death toll could rise further as some of the wounded are in critical condition, Ministry Spokesman Belhassen Oueslati told reporters here this evening.
"Unknown gunmen carried out the heinous and cowardly attack near the borders with Algeria and fled the scene," he said, noting that army units, backed by the security services and a helicopter, launched a massive manhunt following the attack.
"The wounded soldiers are receiving medical treatment at the hospitals El-Kef and Jendouba and some of them could be moved to the Military Hospital in Tunis," Oueslati added.
Several political parties and civil society organizations strongly denounced the terrorist attack and urged the scaling up of the war against terrorism.
No armed group claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet.
