A Bahraini court on Monday sentenced 57 defendants to 15 years in jail for their involvement in riots at the Jaw prison in southern the country last year, the official BNA news agency reported Monday.
The defendants were also ordered to pay a total of 508,187 Bahraini dinars for the damage they caused at the premise, Muhanna Al Shaygi, head of Southern Governorate Public Prosecution, said.
In March last year, the prisoners engaged in acts of chaos, rioting and rebellion inside their wards at the Jaw prison.
They refused to obey the orders and instructions and chased away the guards of the wards and buildings.
They also blocked the doors with pieces of furniture, prompting the authorities to warn them several times to end their rebellion and rioting and comply with the regulations.
