Arab coalition denies using cluster bombs in Yemen

The Saudi-led Arab coalition denied using cluster bombs in air strikes against Houthi militias in Yemen, according to Arab coalition Spokesman Ahmed Asiri.

In statements to Sky News on Sunday, Asiri said the Saudi-led Arab coalition denied using cluster bombs in air strikes at posts controlled by supporters of toppled president Ali Abdallah Saleh and Houthi militias.

The United Nations has received "troubling reports" that cluster bombs have been used on civilian areas in the capital of Yemen this week and warned that the use of such indiscriminate weapons could be a war crime.

The UN chief urged all parties to the Yemen conflict to cooperate with his special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed in order to resume peace talks as soon as possible.

Yemen has been embroiled in civil war since the Houthis took over the capital Sanaa in 2014. Forces loyal to President Hadi have been accompanied by a Saudi-led coalition of warplanes and ground forces to defeat the Houthis. More than 5,700 people died after the conflict escalated in March this year. Several thousands are affected by lack of food and medical supplies.
