Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Al-Araby underlined Saturday importance of responding to a seven-day humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, suggested by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, in light of Egyptian initiative for a ceasefire in the strip.
In his statement issued Saturday, Al-Araby said that the ongoing Israeli aggression on the occupied Gaza Strip has been killing hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians, including women, children, since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
He added that aggression has been demolishing hospitals, mosques, properties of civilians. So due to that aggression, it is necessary to reach an immediate and urgent ceasefire, Al-Araby added.
He called on the Security Council to bear its main responsibility by safeguarding international security and peace, referring to a committee proposed by Arab foreign ministers which will call on the Security Council to stop Israeli aggression on Palestinian people.
The Arab League chief added that the committee will call for lifting the unfair blockade of the Gaza Strip and providing international protection for Palestinian civilians.
He also called on the Security Council to take required procedures to put an end to the Israeli occupation to Arab territories and support the Palestinian people to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and with full sovereignty.
He re-affirmed that the Arab League is constantly co-operating with Palestine and international parties to bring Israelis to justice for their brutal crimes against Palestinian people.
