Awqaf minister takes part in World Conference on Religious Minorities in Morocco

Minister of Awqaf Mohammad Mokhtar Gomaa and his accompanying delegation left here on Sunday for Marakesh on a three-day visit to Morocco during which he will take part in the World Conference on Religious Minorities that is scheduled to take place in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, from January 25 to 27.

In pre-departure statements, Gomaa said he will deliver a speech at the conference to review Egypt's experiment in achieving the modern state that gathers all fellow citizens without discrimination.

He asserted that Islam guaranteed the rights of minorities living in the Muslim communities and secured their worship freedom as well as the values of justice and equality.

The event is expected to attract around 300 Muslim personalities from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and the host country itself; religious authorities from Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, and other non-Muslim religious communities will also be present.

The conference wants to counter “the idea that Muslims and non-Muslims can’t live together,” he added. “This is not who we are or who we want to be.”

The Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs will host the conference together with the UAE-based think tank Forum for the Promotion of Peace in Muslim societies.
