A suicide car bomb blast ripped through a busy commercial street in a southeastern neighbourhood of the Iraqi capital Wednesday, killing at least 14 people, police and medical sources said.
The attack occurred shortly after 5:30 pm (1430 GMT) in the Shiite-dominated district of Baghdad al-Jadida, on a street packed with restaurants as well as clothes and jewellery shops.
A police colonel said the blast had killed at least 14 and wounded 43. A medical source confirmed the toll and said several policemen were among the victims.
Car bombs are an almost daily occurrence in Baghdad. According to a UN tally released on Wednesday, at least 1,119 people were killed in acts of violence across Iraq in September, most of them civilians.
