
The High Court of Appeal upheld today the lifetime imprisonment sentence ruled against five defendants accused of killing policeman Yasser Khan and attempting the murder of other ones, President of the Terror Crimes Prosecution Attorney General Ahmed Al Hammadi announced. Two of the defendants, who challenged the sentence, had their verdict slashed to fifteen years in jail, he added.
The five defendants were among 14 suspects who were indicted in a court hearing on July 6, 2013 of deliberate and premeditated murder of policemen by attacking them and luring them to the area where they had placed an explosive device.
When the victim reached the area where the bomb was hidden, they detonated it killing the police officer. They also attempted to kill the other policemen as part of their terror scheme.
Six of the defendants, held in custody, were referred to the Third High Criminal Court who heard the case on August, 13 of this year and handed down the lifetime imprisonment sentence to all of them. An order was also issued to arrest the other suspects at large.
