Cairo orphanage to be closed, supervisor referred to prosecution over child assault

Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali on Saturday said that it has decided to close Orman orphanage in Cairo district of the Fifth Settlement (Tagamoa al Khamis).

The Orman Charity Association was also ordered to transfer the 15 children living at the orphanage to other branches, the minister added.

A supervisor was referred to the public prosecution after the ministry's internal investigations confirmed that a video published on social media platforms showing her assaulting a child was true, Wali said.

An administrative examination is still going on at the moment according to the law and regulations governing orphanages operating in the country and quality standards issued by the ministry last year to develop their roles, she added.

The minister thanked the woman who documented the video and those who phoned the child helpline, the ministry's hotline, and security forces to deal with the incident.
