The Court of Cassation on Tuesday upheld a verdict to release Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, the sons of former president Hosni Mubarak, pending investigations into accusations that they along with their father used funds allocated for the maintenance of presidential palaces to renovate their own personal villas.
The court turned down the prosecution's challenge of the verdict.
In October, 2015, Cairo Criminal Court decided to release Alaa and Gamal Mubarak in the case, known in the media as "presidential palaces case".
in January, 2016, the Court of Cassation issued a final verdict upholding a three-year rigorous imprisonment to Mubarak and his two sons in the relevant case.
