Declaration of Algiers, great call for definitive agreement

Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General for Libya Bernardino Léon welcomed Thursday the “constructive and neutral” role of Algeria for the restoration of peace in Libya, underlining that the declaration, culminating the 3rd round of the inter-Libyan dialogue, is a “great call” to conclude a definitive agreement.

Speaking in a press conference at the end of the 3rd round of the inter-Libyan dialogue, bringing together leaders and heads of political parties and Libyan activists, Leon expressed his gratitude towards Algeria for its important, constructive and neutral role for the restoration of peace in Libya.

On this occasion, he said that the declaration culminating this third round of dialogue is a great call, due to its clarity and legitimacy and which meets the aspirations of the Libyan society.

This declaration, underlined Leon, “calls for responsibility and to conclude an agreement for the formation of a Libyan government of national unity.”

He ensured that “all the Libyan political players who participated in this third round of dialogue, represent 95% of the Libyan society,” pointing out that “all the participants in the meeting of Algiers belong to political parties having marked the Libyan political scene during the three last years.”

Our stake at the level of the United Nations is to seek the clarity that lacks the previous version of the draft agreement which was, he underlined, defeated by the general national Congress in Tripoli because of the ambiguities it contained, particularly those relating to the institutional competencies.
