Egypt urges UN to adopt 'equal citizenship' initiative

Egypt has urged the international institutions topped by the UN to adopt the initiative of "equal citizenship" throughout the world and without any discrimination or exception.

It also called on the international institutions to entrench the principle of peaceful coexistence.

This came during Egypt's speech, read out by Awqaf Minister Mokhtar Gomaa, before the conference on safeguarding the rights of religious minorities in Muslim countries.

Gomaa, meanwhile, called for issuing an international law to criminalize contempt of religion in order to entrench principle of mutual understanding and coexistence instead of conflict and exclusion.

He also hailed Morocco for its keenness on organizing the conference.

The aim of this summit is to reaffirm the rights of religious minorities through releasing a new declaration rooted in Islamic Law emphasizing on protection of non-Muslims groups within an Islamic community.
