Cairo - Anadolu

At least 171 Egyptians have been killed and thousands injured since June 30 protests that culminated in the overthrow of elected president Mohamed Morsi, according to a tally by the Anadolu Agency. Most fatalities occurred in Cairo, where 90 people have been killed within the last three weeks. In one of the bloodiest days on July 18, at least 51 pro-Morsi demonstrators were killed outside Republican Guard headquarters in Cairo. An army officer was also killed and at least 40 injured in the same incident. While the Muslim Brotherhood accused security forces of attacking protesters while they were performing Fajr (dawn) prayers, the army claimed that a \"terrorist group\" had attempted to storm the compound, where Morsi supporters believed the ousted president was being held. On July 15, seven demonstrators were killed in Cairo\'s Ramses Square, where thousands of Morsi loyalists had assembled to protest his ouster, according to the Health Ministry. Twenty-four people, meanwhile, including both civilians and army personnel, have been killed in militant attacks in Egypt\'s Sinai Peninsula since June 30. And in the coastal city of Alexandria, at least 18 people have been killed in clashes between Morsi\'s supporters and opponents. Three women also lost their lives on July 19 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a pro-Morsi rally in the Nile Delta City of Mansoura. A total of 39 people have also been killed in acts of violence in other Egyptian governorates since June 30. Morsi, Egypt\'s first democratically elected president, was deposed by the military on July 3 following mass protests against his regime. The military also suspended the constitution and installed Adly Mansour, the head of the constitutional court, as interim president. Since then, thousands of Morsi supporters have staged daily demonstrations and sit-ins to demand his reinstatement.
