The Consultative (Shura) Council of Ennahdha Party said here on Saturday the party will not back any presidential candidate, but urged Tunisians, particularly its supporters, to go to polling stations en masse.
"Supporters of Ennahdha are free to vote for the candidate they deem the most capable to lead the democratic process in Tunisia and to fulfill the revolutionary goals of freedom, dignity and transitional justice," the Council said in an online statement following its meeting held today.
The council said it hoped the decision would serve the interest of the nation and its revolution, according to the statement.
The Shura Council had indicated that it would announce over the week-end the candidate whom it would back in the forthcoming presidential elections.
The first round of Tunisia's presidential elections is scheduled to take place on November 23, with 27 candidates competing, mainly former Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi, incumbent President Moncef Marzouki, and president of the Constituent Assembly Mustapha Ben Jaafar.
