British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Thursday formation of a government of national unity in Iraq was necessary to confront the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), which has occupied many areas in the country.
There is a strong realization in the need of forming an inclusive Iraqi government in order to speed up the international backing to confront and defeat the terrorist organization, Hague told a news conference in Baghdad.
"We believe the most important factor that will eliminate the danger of ISIL is the political unity of Iraqis and swift formation of an Iraqi government consisting of all parties," he added.
Hagued, who arrived earlier on a surprise visit, hoped the new government would deal with the "moderate" parties vis-a-vis all issues particularly oil supplies.
He urged all Iraqi leaders to unite in the face of the very existence of Iraq because of the growing space controlled by ISIL.
Britain, said Hague, was ready to provide diplomatic support for Iraq as well as other aid to fight terrorism.
Hague also said that assistance should be extended to Jordan and Lebanon to address ramifications of the Iraqi crisis
