
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will honor His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his global humanitarian efforts, Kuwait's Permanent Delegate to the UN and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghoneim has said.
The IOM Council will offer His Highness the Amir an appreciation award during the opening of its 105th session, November 25-28, Al-Ghoneim told KUNA on Thursday.
He noted that the IOM Director General William Swing will deliver a statement on the humanitarian role of His Highness the Amir on the world level. Then he will announce offering him the award in recognition of his distinguished support to humanitarian efforts through the UN and other organizations worldwide, Al-Ghoneim said.
According to the Kuwaiti envoy, the IOM honoring appreciates His Highness the Amir's support to the organization's operations serving the displaced, migrants and refugees, victims of wars and catastrophes.
Al-Ghoneim disclosed that the UN Humanitarian Envoy and Amiri Diwan Advisor Dr. Abdullah Al-Matouq will receive the award on behalf of His Highness the Amir at the Council opening session.
During his visit to the UN Geneva Office that lasts until November 28, Al-Matouq will meet with IOM head and members, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and a host of UN coordinators and officials.
The IOM Council is the highest authority of the organization. It meets in a regular session once a year and in special sessions at the request of: one third of its members, the Executive Committee, the Director General or the Chairperson of the Council in urgent circumstances.
The main functions of the Council, as set out in the provisions of the IOM Constitution, are to: determine the policies of the Organization; review the reports, approve and direct the activities of the Executive Committee; review the reports, approve and direct the activities of the Director General; review and approve the program, the Budget, the expenditure and the accounts of the Organization; and to take any other appropriate action to further the purposes of the Organization.
