Jordan reiterates full support to al-Aqsa Mosque

King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday pledged his country's continued support to Al Aqsa Mosque, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan will continue to exert all possible efforts and coordinate with the regional and international players and concerned countries to remove obstacles to allow resumption of peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis, he said.

The king made his remarks at a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, where he voiced support to the Palestinian s efforts to enhance unity and solidarity.

He added that Jordan places all its capabilities at the disposal of the Palestinians.

On Jerusalem, King Abdullah rejected all unilateral Israeli measures and violations in Al Aqsa Mosque and the holy sites in the city.

The king added that Jordan will continue to defend Al Aqsa Mosque and the steadfastness of the Palestinians and to protect their Arabic identity.

Jordan, which signed a peace deal with Israel in 1994, oversees holy Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem.

At the meeting, the Palestinian president briefed King Abdullah on efforts to resume peace talks and voiced appreciation for Jordan's support in this regard.

"I discussed with King Abdullah the latest serious Israeli measures in Al Aqsa Mosque during the meeting," Abbas was quoted as saying.

Over the past few weeks, Jordan condemned Israeli forces and settlers for breaking into the yards of Al Aqsa Mosque, a matter that resulted in clashes with worshippers at the mosque.
