Jordan has proposed to the UN Security Council a draft resolution, on behalf of Arab countries, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the coastal enclave.
The draft condemns all violence and hostilities directed against civilians and all acts of terrorism and urges all parties to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, according to (Petra) news agency.
It also calls for taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of civilians, including the immediate cessation of retaliatory military and collective punishment and excessive use of force against the civilian population.
The draft bill emphasizes the need to lift the Israeli restrictions on the movement of people and goods to and from Gaza and the re-opening of Gaza crossings.
The draft also underlines the need to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza, and urges all parties to refrain from actions and steps that could further destabilize the situation.
The resolution calls for renewed and urgent efforts by the concerned parties and the international community to achieve a comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
The draft UN resolution expresses "grave concern in particular at the resulting heavy civilian casualties among the Palestinian civilian population, including among children" and at the deepening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
