Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman recently made a phone call to Sheikh Ayedh Al-Qarni, a prominent Saudi religious scholar, to check on his health.
The sheikh was shot and wounded in the arm on March 1 in the Philippine city of Zamboanga after delivering a lecture at the city’s university.
He was admitted to the King Abdulaziz National Guard Hospital here on Wednesday, following his transfer from a hospital in Manilla in a special plane ordered by the king.
Commenting on the king’s call, Abdulaziz Turkistani, former Saudi ambassador to Japan and former adviser to the Islamic Affairs Minister, told Arab News that the king’s call was a rare gesture. “Despite being busy with overseeing one of the largest military exercises in the world (North Thunder), the king took time to call Al-Qarni. This shows how much King Salman cares and respects the citizens and scholars.”
The king’s call on Saturday was the second since the shooting took place. The first one was when Al-Qarni was in hospital in Manila.
“The king told me then that he had ordered a special plane to transfer me from Manila to Riyadh, whenever his health condition allowed,” Al-Qarni had tweeted.
The Riyadh governor also visited Al-Qarni in the hospital on Friday and wished him a quick recovery. Earlier on Thursday, he was visited by Islamic Affairs Minister Sheikh Saleh Al-Asheikh.
A group of 20 Filipinos, accompanying Sheikh Ali Al-Malki, expressed sorrow to Al-Qarni for the assassination attempt and declared their intention to embrace Islam in front of him recently.
