
The new Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud is well known throughout the Kingdom as an experienced statesman and the man who will fill the gap left by the late 91-year-old King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud who ascended the throne in 2005.
King Salman bin Saud bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud was born in 1935. His political career began in 1954 when was assigned as deputy governor of Riyadh province and then the governor until he resigned from the post in 1960. However, he returned to the governor's post in 1963 on orders from the then King Saud bin Abdulaziz.
In 2011, a royal decree was issued assigning him as Defense Minister and by 2012 he assumed the responsibility of Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister whilst keeping his Defense Ministry post.
King Salman was also known for chairing numerous charitable posts in the 1950s and 1960s.
The current swift transition in the leadership came as a result of the 2006 allegiance system set by late King Abdullah; thus, allowing King Salman to resume his post in leading the nation.
