Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has appealed to Muslim nations to resolve the crises in Palestine, Syria and Yemen, and for further efforts to counterterrorism across the world.
In a speech at the 13th session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit here Thursday, King Salman said that the Muslim world needs to find a “just solution” to the Palestinian issue in accordance with the Arab peace initiative and international resolutions.
Measures should also be adopted to “put an end to the Syrian crisis according to the decisions of Geneva 1 and Security Council resolution 2254, as well as support the existing efforts to end the Libyan crisis.”
“On the Yemeni cause, we support the efforts of the UN to ensure the success of consultations to be held in Kuwait as part of the implementation of Security Council resolution 2216,” King Salman told the assembled leaders, which included Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He said the current situation requires the Muslim world “more than ever to fight the scourge of terrorism and to protect the younger generation.” He said that extremist groups were falsely claiming that they were acting in the name of Islam.
“We have made a serious step in this direction to form an Islamic Military Alliance to fight terrorism, which includes 39 countries, with the coordination of efforts through intellectual, media, financial and military initiatives based on the OIC’s principles and objectives,” said King Salman.
He said that conflicts have been exacerbated in the region because of the ” blatant interference in the affairs of a number of Muslims countries” by certain nations. He said these countries, in their attempts to control the region, had been “sowing seeds of discord and division, as well as inciting sectarian strife and using armed militias to destabilize our security and stability.”
Earlier, officials from the Kingdom and Turkey signed an agreement to establish the Saudi-Turkish Coordination Council, in the presence of King Salman and Erdogan.
The pact, signed by Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir and Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Jawoh Ihsanoglu, is aimed at enhancing cooperation in politics, banking, finance, maritime navigation, energy, agriculture, culture, education, technology, military industries, security and media.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance Sheikh Saleh bin Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh, Minister of Finance Ibrahim bin Abdulaziz Al-Assaf, Minister of Transport Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Al-Moqbil and Minister of Culture and Information Adel Al-Toraifi.
Earlier, the King met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam on the sidelines of the summit and reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed a number of topics on the summit’s agenda. On the same day, the king met with President Nursultan Nazarbayev of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the same purpose.
The king left Turkey on Thursday for Riyadh and was seen off by Erdogan at Ataturk Airport. Other officials present were Turkish Minister of Economy Mustafa Elitas and a number of Turkish officials, as well as the Saudi Ambassador to Turkey Adel bin Siraj Mirdad.
