Kuwait sounds alarm about regional security challenges

Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry Khaled Al-Jarallah warned here on Monday that the region is embroiled in major security challenges and perils.
"Our regional security is facing major challenges and looming political, economic, security, environmental and cultural risks," Al-Jarallah addressed a Kuwait University conference held on Monday under sponsorship of First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
"Undoubtedly, regional conflicts and disputes, together with consequent security challenges, will stand as a stumbling block to our stability and to the Middle East peace process due to Israeli recalcitrance, thus posing a challenge to our security. Therefore, efforts need to be exerted to encourage the UN Security Council to shoulder responsibility by obliging Israel to accept peace," he said.
Co-organized by the Kuwait University College of Social Sciences and the UK Durham University, the two-day conference was entitled: "Kuwait and Regional Security".
He stressed the significance of promoting relations among the region's countries, and exerting efforts to achieve regional integration in all cooperative fields.
On Syria, Al-Jarallah emphasized that the devastating humanitarian crisis in Syria, terrorism, its risks to world security and stability and instability in Iraq require an all-out confrontation involving homes, schools, mosques, mass media and social communication networks.
On Kuwait's response to such perils, the senior Kuwaiti official said: "Under such circumstances and developments, Kuwait's foreign policy has played a key role under the statesmanship of its leadership in maintaining our national security." "I have repeatedly warned, on different occasions, against the serious escalation of such conditions, and have called for finding peaceful solutions to such conflicts and setting aside military solutions that only lead to destruction and devastation," he reminded.
Instructed by His Highness the Amir, Kuwait has moved immediately to help the Syrian people and to alleviate the sufferings of Syrians refugees by hosting two international donors conferences for Syria, he boasted.
His Highness the Amir has also complied with the UN's request to host a third donors conference by the end of next March in a step that reflects His Highness the Amir's interest in the Syrian humanitarian crisis, Al-Jarallah pointed out.
In this regard, the Kuwaiti official urged academicians and experts to carefully consider the dimensions and reflections of such critical circumstances and difficult situations and to come up with recommendations that could be used as references for future policies in view of response to such changes.
For his part, Dean of the Kuwait University Faculty of Social Sciences Dr. Abdulreda Aseri said the conference aimed to promote and consolidate joint cooperation between the Kuwait University and the UK Durham University.
It was also intended to ponder over local, regional and international issues through an academic perspective before producing practical recommendations and suggestions and finding solutions, he said.
The conferences focused on the discussion of regional security risks and perils through an international approach, Aseri pointed out.
