Ministry of Interior's (MoI) General Department of Civil Defense will test warning sirens on Thursday at 10:OO am to perform periodic maintenance, a security source said.
The department updated the early warning system by replacing all mechanical sirens with modern electronic ones, MoI's Assistant Undersecretary for Operations Major-General Jamal Al-Sayegh said in a statement on Sunday.
The modern electronic sirens have technical standards that cope with modern technology and they are connected with digital communication system (TETRA), it stressed.
There are 237 sirens across the country and have three clear tones, it said, pointing out that the department will do a field study on all new residential areas to install required sirens.
This move prioritizes the department which is doing a study now on many buildings nationwide for this purpose.
He, in the statement, urged citizens to phone the operations of civil defense at No. 1804000 if they don't hear the siren's tone or related voice message.
Such tests are made to remind citizens and residents of the necessary safety precautions that must be taken in case of emergency or danger.
