
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Acting Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Khaled Hamad Al-Sabah stressed importance Tuesday of confronting drugs by all segments of society and through teachings of Islam and social values.
In a speech marking the International Day against Drug Abuse, due June 26th, Sheikh Mohammad, who is also the Chairman of the National Committee for the Prevention of Drugs, asserted the need to continue communication among social institutions and to support awareness programs to reduce the use of drugs, noting that drug abuse threatens all societies and in particular young people.
The minister explained that despite national strategy progress to combat drugs throughout the years, including policies and the development of mechanisms and means to do so, and ongoing work between the General Administration for Combating Drugs and other specialized apparatus.
"Our region is still being targeted and is currently experiencing more smuggling operations ...," he said.
Sheikh Mohammad added that they in a war against this serious plague and its ramifications which will not stop without unity among all agencies in the country, including raising awareness projects to minimize the spread of this problem.
The minister also warned against the risk of drug abuse and addiction, which are within reach of children, adding that the family, the educational institution, and media are on the front lines in this battle.
The minister noted that they are working "through clear strategies and effective action plans in addressing all dimensions of the problem legislatively and through preventive security apparatuses and jointly with civil society organizations."
