Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammad Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah hoisted Kuwait's flag at Safat Sq on Thursday, commencing the national day celebrations.
The flag hoisting ceremony gathered Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah and other ministers and governors as well as a large number of the public.
Sheikh Mohammad, who attended the ceremony on behalf of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, toured an exhibition at the nearby Al-Mubarkiya marketplace.
On his part, Sheikh Salman, who doubles as head of the standing committee on national celebrations, said this year's celebrations are being held under the slogan of "Humanitarian Leader," in commemoration of the UN honoring of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in last September.
"The stage is set for the national celebrations thanks to the sincere efforts made by the various state departments, non-government bodies and public figures," he said in statements to KUNA.
Sheikh Salman appreciated the efforts of members of the organizing committee, notably the committee's secretary Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as well as the executive teams of the Ministry of Information.
"The events this year include the "Lit City" celebration on February 14 and Bait Al-Qurain celebration on February 24 in commemoration of Kuwait martyrs," he added.
He invited the citizens and expatriates in Kuwait to the Humanitarian Leader carnival, due on February 26 on the Gulf St. and the celebration marking the reopening of the landmark Kuwait Towers after refurbishment on the same day.
