
The diplomat and former minister of Foreign Affairs, Lakhdar Brahimi hailed Wednesday the mediation efforts of Algeria for the unification of the ranks of Malian parties.
"I am very glad that Algeria has contributed with others to help our brothers in Mali resolve their problems," said Brahimi in his address at a ceremony marking the Algerian Diplomacy Day, celebrated every 8 October.
"What is happening in this neighbouring country is a matter of great interest for us," he said.
Brahimi, known for his role of mediator in many international crises, congratulated Algeria on its "commitment" to carrying out it mediation efforts for the resolution of the crisis in Mali.
Brahimi reaffirmed Algeria's belonging to the African continent and underlined the role of the November 1954 Revolution in the emergence of liberation movements as well as the support of the independent Algeria to these movements and African states in general.
He also underlined that the global diplomacy "has adapted to the new situation following the collapse of Berlin Wall.
As regards the scourge of terrorism, Brahimi said that economic sanctions are not very efficient means to eradicate it. Such measures are harmful to ordinary people, he added citing the example of Iraq.
