Lebanon's army Tuesday night shelled militants who tried to attack a military post in Ersal, violating a 24-hour ceasefire agreed upon earlier today, media reports said.
The National News Agency (NNA) said that militants tried to target a military post in Ersal but the army repelled them and then targeted groups of insurgents with artillery shells.
It added that members of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) had tried to prevent people from leaving border town after the ceasefire took hold at 7pm local time (GMT 1600).
The agency noted that ISIL militants seemed to be divided over the fighting pause.
Lebanon's army chief General Jean Kahwaji had agreed on the ceasefire initiative to let humanitarian aid and food staff into Ersal and for the evacuation of the wounded, on the condition that once "the ceasefire is verified", militants will withdraw from the town releasing military and security forces held hostages by the militant group.
"The army won't tolerate any violation from the militants".
