Geneva - XINHUA

At least 142 civilians were killed and 224 others injured in the 11 days ending Monday during the conflict in Yemen, spokesperson for the United Nations(UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights said here Tuesday.

The death toll, which includes 36 children and 27 women, has brought the total civilian death toll since March 26 this year in Yemen to 1,670, the spokesperson said.

Besides, another 3,829 people were injured during this period. Civilian infrastructure has also been affected, with at least 187 sites partially or completely destroyed as a result of the armed conflict.

According to the spokesperson, two markets in different provinces in Yemen were hit by airstrikes on July 6. 40 civilians, including 12 children and seven women, were killed in one market, while another 36 civilians, including eight women and nine children, were killed in the other market.

Earlier on Monday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed disappointment that a planned ceasefire in Yemen did not take place over the weekend, and called on all sides on the ground to "prevent deterioration of the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe" in the conflict-worn country.

Saudi-led coalition has been fighting Houthis for months without any sign to end this war, especially after the failure of talks among Yemeni political parties in Geneva.
