The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Friday welcomed the outcome of the first ministerial-level meeting in Brussels which aimed at stepping up fight of the global coalition to counter the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
OIC took part in the December 3 meeting as "one of the pioneering organizations that clearly condemned the so-called ISIL and considered it the number one enemy of Islam and its values," the Jeddah-based organization said in a statement.
OIC Secretary General Iyad Madani said defeating ISIL required a comprehensive strategy which included military and ideological means.
This strategy, he added, should explore the circumstances in which ISIL has grown, foremost the "dismantling of political, administrative, civil and social institutions in Iraq since the American intervention in 2003." Madani, however, welcomed the positive transformation in the policy of the current Iraqi government.
He welcomed UN Special Representative to Syria Staffan de Mistura's efforts to find a peaceful solution for the Syrian conflict based on the communique of Geneva I of 2012.
Sixty partners in the Brussels meeting reaffirmed commitment to work together under a common, multifaceted, and long-term strategy to degrade and defeat ISIL.
Participants decided that the efforts of the global coalition should focus on multiple lines of effort: Supporting military operations, capacity building, and training; Stopping flow of foreign terrorist fighters; Cutting off ISIL access to financing and funding; Addressing associated humanitarian relief and crises; and Exposing ISIL true nature.
