
A total of 236 people lost their lives and 2,685 others were injured in 686 road accidents that occurred nationwide during the first nine months of 2014, according to the report published Sunday by the National Gendarmerie.
Out of the total number of victims (killed and injured), 133 were children aged under 9 and 112 under 14, said the source.
The number of deaths increased from 207 during the same period in 2013 up to 236 in 2014, while the number of injured went down from 2,986 in 2013 to 2.658 in 2014, and that of road accidents dropped from 798 to 686 during the same period of reference, said the report.
These accidents were mainly caused by drivers in 89.21% of cases and pedestrians in 5.54%, in addition to other factors related to vehicles, bad road and weather conditions.
Buses were involved in 74.20% of these accidents, followed by taxis and public transport vehicles.
