SASO warns against risky children’s toys

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has urged parents to buy children’s toys only with Gulf Conformity Marking, to ensure they are safe.
SASO has issued a set of requirements to ensure that children’s toys sold on local markets meet safety standards, said Tamis Al-Hammadi, SASO spokesman, recently.
Toys that do not conform to Gulf standards could have easy-to-remove batteries or other small components that can be swallowed by small children, resulting in suffocation or damage to internal organs. Internal metal parts should be made of galvanized steel, and be crack-free, he said.
He said some banned toys also contain harmful bacteria or sharp edges or openings that can cause serious health problems. Parents must buy toys that suit the ages of their children; and refrain from purchasing those with non-Islamic branding.
The most important sign is the Gulf Conformity Marking, which indicates that the toy is free from any chemicals, flammable or radioactive materials. SASO conducts regular inspections of shops to ensure compliance with regulations, with violators referred to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, he said
