Deputy Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah
Kuwait - KUNA

Kuwait underlined importance of further global efforts to eradicate terrorism and its financing resources, and called for abiding by UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions 2170 and 2178 regarding terrorism, namely ISIL, and foreign fighters.
"Terrorism is not restricted to special areas but is threatening countries of the whole world," First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said in a speech at the UN House to mark the UN Day 2014.
UNSC resolution 2170 aims at cracking down on terrorist organizations in the region, while resolution 2178 aimed at squeezing grip on foreign terrorist fighters joining outlawed groups in the region.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled appreciated UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's unprecedented initiative to honor His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah last month as a "Humanitarian Leader" and Kuwait as a "Humanitarian Center." The UN honoring, he added, was in appreciation of His Highness the Amir's relentless humanitarian work to alleviate the suffering of the people in need around the globe.
He noted that Kuwait celebrated last year the 50th anniversary of its UN membership.
Kuwait, said Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, has been living up to its international obligations, and has recently donated USD five million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to help it in its efforts to combat Ebola virus.
Kuwait is also attaching great attention to renewable energy, and has already adopted certain measures to decrease greenhouse gas emissions for the sake of addressing global warming, he said.
Kuwait, he added, also began using clean energies and environmental-friendly materials.
He hoped the international efforts succeed in addressing global warming in order to have more stable and safe climate.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, meanwhile, called anew for reforming the UN and to expand permanent membership of the Security Council in order to achieve justice and democracy within the international organization.

Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Al-Sabeeh, in another speech, said the UN Day marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the first UN office in Kuwait.
"This year materialized strong cooperation between the State of Kuwait and the UN," added Al-Sabeeh, also Minister of State for Planning and Development.
She said kuwait was proud of the UN honoring of His Highness the Amir, which resulted from endless humanitarian contributions to the needy around the world, and to the relevant UN agencies.
Al-Sabeeh said cooperation between Kuwait and the UN contributed to improvement of social, statistical and development domains in Kuwait.
She said the UN Development Program (UNDP) was carrying out a great role in the improvement of manpower in Kuwait in order to meet international labor standards.
Mubashar Riaz Sheikh, UN Resident Coordinator, commended His Highness the Amir's humanitarian contributions that alleviated suffering of people worldwide.
He praised the government of Kuwait's great support for the UN, and highlighted the "active contributions" of the Kuwaiti youth, who represented more than 60 percent of population.
Sheikh said he was looking forward to boosting strategic partnership with Kuwait.
After the speeches, the UN honored Dr. Abdullah Al-Maatouq, Head of the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) and UN Secretary General's Humanitarian Envoy and Amiri Diwan Advisor, for his efforts to promoting humanitarian causes.
