
Firefighters and Civil Defense rescue teams evacuated a popular market after a massive fire broke out on Wednesday in some of the shops. There were no casualties.
The market, known as Prince Miteb Souq, is located near Jeddah’s Al-Jamaa district.
Col. Saeed Sarhan, media spokesman of the Civil Defense in Makkah, said: “As soon as we received the report in the morning, our firefighters rushed to the scene. They were backed by rescue teams.”
The fire engulfed 15 furniture shops and reduced them to ashes. The losses were estimated at more than SR5 million.
Col. Sarhan said that the areas surrounding the scene of accident were immediately evacuated for the safety of people.
Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
