Tripoli-based lawmakers have sacked Omar al-Hassi, the prime minister of Libya's rival government.
A spokesman for the Islamist-backed parliament, Omar Humeidan confirmed on Tuesday that the General National Congress (GNC) has removed al-Hassi from his post as prime minister.
Speaking to reporters, Humeidan indicated that sacking al-Hassi was passed by 70 lawmakers while 14 ministers warned they would offer resignation in case their request was refuted.
Seventy five out of 85 of the GNC members attended the session.
Libya currently has two parliaments, one with Islamist backing, and the internationally-recognized one in Tobruk.
Unrest following the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi's government in 2011 later led to a political split when the Islamist Fajr Libya militia coalition seized Tripoli three years later and installed a rival government.
