UK envoy: Libya needs one government to fight suicide

British Ambassador to Libya Peter Millett said Libya needs to be ruled by one government to be able to fight the terrorist Daesh group in some parts of Libya, Libya Channel reported on Thursday.

Millett said Britain backs any party fighting Daesh, terming as "positive" the Libyan army's liberation of one of the biggest terrorist havens in Benghazi.

He said Britain is ready for cooperating with the unity government and sending an international penalty committee to lift the ban imposed on the Libyan army armament.

In February, the Libyan unity government was formed. Under the national accord agreement, Libya's rival administrations -- one supported by the internationally recognized parliament in the east and the other backed by an Islamist-backed militia in Tripoli -- are supposed to cede power to a new Government of National Accord (GNA) under prime minister-designate Fayez al-Sarraj.

Libya has been in chaos since the 2011 fall of long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival administrations and armed groups fighting for control of the oil-rich country.

A rebel alliance overran Tripoli in August 2014, establishing its own government and parliament and causing the recognized administration to flee to the country's remote east.
