The United States will not recognize a ‘self-rule’, semi-autonomous Kurdish zone in Syria and remains committed to the country’s unity, US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said Wednesday.
"We’ve been very clear that we won’t recognize any self-rule autonomous zones within Syria," spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.
"This is something that needs to be discussed and agreed upon by the relevant parties in Geneva and then by the Syrian people themselves," he stressed.
Pressed on whether Washington could accept a federal structure for Syria if that were ultimately the choice of the Syrian people themselves, the US official said "Yes." Meanwhile, more than 150 delegates from Kurdish parties met Wednesday in Rmeilan, with the aim to declare a federation over Kurdish-controlled areas in Syria.
