Two Australian tourists died on Sunday while 23 others sustained injuries after the vehicle they were travelling was involved in a grisly accident in Narok County, about 100 km southwest of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The accident occurred near Eor Ekule Trading centre along the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu highway, about 20 km from Narok town.
The scene is barely three kilometres from the black spot Pinyiny area, where 41 people were killed in a traffic accident in August last year.
Narok County Administration Police Commandant Paul Kerich said one tourist died on the spot while the other died while undergoing treatment at Narok County Referral Hospital.
"One tourist is in critical condition and has been transferred to Nairobi for special treatment," said Kerich.
The police chief said the accident happened when the rear tyre of the vehicle in which the tourists were travelling bursted and the driver lost control.
"The truck was speeding downhill when one of the tyre bursted and the driver lost control and hit a guard rail before rolling several times and plunge into a river," Kerich said.
He urged the road users to observe the traffic rules as many lives have been lost through road accidents.
The tourists were headed to Tanzania through Maasai Mara Game Reserve from Nairobi to witness the annual wildebeest migration.
The police have cautioned drivers that the area is a renowned black spot and called on motorists to exercise caution as they drive along the road.
"There are a lot of sharp bends and steep depressions along this road. We want to appeal to drivers especially those who are new to exercise caution so as to avoid unnecessary deaths," Kerich said.
