29 Inmates killed in Bolivian prison riot

A prison riot claimed the lives of 29 inmates and one child in eastern Bolivia, dpa quoted the interior minister as saying. The 18-month-old was among the charred victims found after a clash between rival groups in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, where some inmates have their children live with them, Minister Carlos Romero said Friday. Health Minister Juan Carlos Calvimontes reported 38 wounded. \"Most of the injured have various burns and fractures,\" he said. Romero said inmates of rival sections were fighting for control of space and leadership. \"They used machetes, knives, poles, shivs, improvised weapons and gas cylinders that provoked the fires in the pavilion,\" he said.
