Three people, including a government soldier and a police officer, were wounded in a grenade attack by suspected leftist rebels in southern Philippine province of South Cotabato early Friday morning, police said.
The rebels belonging to the New People's Army threw a grenade inside their detachment at 4:30 a.m., Police Inspector John Fredo Primacio, commander of 1st Maneuver Platoon of the Provincial Public Safety Company, said in a local radio program.
The incident caused injuries to Police Officer Norberto Lanaria, his wife Hydee, and Corporal Florante Basco of the 27th Infantry Battalion.
"We heard a motorbike sped off seconds after the blast. Those wounded are now safe," Primacio said.
He blamed NPA rebels for the attack, saying they have intelligence report that the guerrillas will launch attack against them.
The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.
