
At least eight people were killed after a motorboat capsized in a river near Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Thursday, police said.
Rescuers pulled seven bodies from Buriganga River after the boat with more than 50 people abroad collided a sand-laden barge and capsized near Fatulla of Narayanganj district, 20 kilometres south of the capital city, office Asaduzzaman said.
The other person died later as rescuers rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the police officer said as many as 40 passengers managed to swim ashore with the help of the local fishermen.
Divers from coastguard and Fire Service and Civil Defence department have still been searching for missing passengers, said Anisur Rahman, chief administration of the district.
The rescuers located the sunken boat, but could not salvage it, he added.
