Airstrikes have been conducted by American jet fighters targeting Daesh Daesh suicide in Sabratha in northwestern Libya, US media reported.
NBC News quoted a senior U.S. official as saying that the airstrike likely killed Tunisian ISIS (Daesh) operative Noureddine Chouchane.
The 36-year-old was wanted by authorities and had been named as one of the suspects in last year's shooting at the Bardo Museum in Tunis which left 23 people dead, it added.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that Friday morning's U.S. strike in the al-Qasser district in Sabratha, where most residents are from Tunisia, killed at least 37 people and wounded six others, according to the Sabratha's mayor, Hussein al-Thawadi.
Over the last several weeks, CNN noted, the United States had observed militants moving around the targeted site and undergoing what appeared to be special training.
"This was outside the normal training camp scenario," a US official said.
