President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, met here Thursday with Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister and discussed developments in Ukraine. "This working meeting was at the Prime Minister's request mainly dedicated to the situation in Ukraine. We also discussed some economic issues," Barroso told reporters after the meting. "Prime Minister Tusk and I both welcome the recent repeal by the Ukrainian Parliament of the so-called anti-protest laws. This was an anti-democratic package of legislation which curtailed individual freedoms. We hope that the decision of the Parliament will now be enforced," he said. "We expect a political solution of the current stalemate, respecting the rule of law, human rights and the will of the Ukrainian people" added Barroso. On his part, Tusk said that "it is of outmost importance to stop any act of violence. "We are all very much depressed by the footage that we have been receiving from Kiev. The Kiev authorities have to understand that it is only dialogue within Ukraine that will lead to open door to assistance from the EU," he added.
