A Japanese couple were found alive 12 days after their car plunged from a 39-foot cliff into a swamp, authorities said. The 65-year-old man and 76-year-old woman were driving in Higashiomi, Shiga prefecture, this month when he swerved to avoid something in the road and ended up plummeting over the cliff, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported Monday. Neither were seriously injured in the crash, but they were unable to call for help because they didn't have cellphones, Japanese media reported. The couple stayed in their partially submerged vehicle and survived by drinking swamp water. They were finally rescued when the husband climbed out of the swamp and was spotted by a passing driver, who called authorities. The husband reportedly had started to climb out of the swamp at least once earlier, but returned to the vehicle because he did not want to leave his wife behind.
