
The death toll rose to 28 in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, as violence spread to new areas despite the deployment of soldiers in the region, officials said Monday. The killing of three Hindus on August 27 sparked tensions between the two communities in Muzaffarnagar district. “We have recovered 28 bodies after the clashes. A total of 90 people have been arrested so far,” senior police official Arun Kumar said in state capital Lucknow, reported DPA. Clashes broke out Saturday, and more killings were reported on Sunday. About 40 people had been injured, at least nine seriously, and the death toll could rise, officials said.
