Over 17 people were killed and many others injured in rain-related incidents as torrential rain continued on Friday in eastern Punjab province of Pakistan and its administered Kashmir, taking the death toll to 70, said officials.
According to police and rescue officials, at least five deaths were reported in eastern Rawalpindi city as three men died when the wall of a house collapsed; a child drowned near Fauji Colony and a resident died from mud-slides near Rawalpindi High Court.
Pakistan's meteorological office issued a severe weather warning for northeast Punjab and Kashmir, saying more intense rain was expected, which could trigger flash flooding.
Residents have been issued alerts by the district administrative authorities to evacuate their homes due to high flood in Chenab River and a low-level flood in river Jhelum. Roof collapses, landslides and electric shocks caused most of the deaths as a number of cities received over 130mm of rain. Pakistan army assisted the rescue teams to evacuate the people from the flooded areas.
